I am currently working on a sled and may end up at Waconia with it. That is the plan. I just wanted to get some opinions on how far to take it. It was raced and has some battle scars and wondered should I try and sand all of these scratches and imperfections out of the tunnel and bulkhead or do I leave them and shin it up and call it good? I don't care about trophies or bragging rights I just want to be involved with the build and have some fun. Time is an issue due to all the work everything else needs to get this ready. What do all of you think?

You asked so here we go. Is the build-off a (beauty) contest? If it is, what would the other guys think if you got a trophy and they didn't? You're talking about visible flaws, right? If its a "most popular" contest, that's another thing altogether.

If your going to have the hood and panels repainted and a new seat cover and shine up the engine etc i would go ahead and fix all the flaws.

ed, take this for what it's worth, your project and strictly up to you, but,.......
here in the car restoration world a thing is happening with these old "cool" cars,... in the 70's the hay day of street cars, drag cars etc. they are all disappearing into the world of being spot on restorations, sure some are just cruisers but the 70's area cars are disappearing. the 10+ color lacquer jobs, the jacked up big tire cars, the cool stuff then and maybe not so cool now is all disappearing!! i read a cool article in hot rod magazine a few years ago about this. it was a street strip car, had some cool drag history, and the car was restored back to original condition. it was a 1970 cuda. was a 383 car. nice car but not a rare car by no means. when the guy bought it, it had cool traction products on it, big tires, wild paint scheme, roll cage, etc.,etc.,etc. but was still all street legal. the guy restored it 100% orginal and now he is kicking him self so bad for not leaving the history in the car and wished very much he would have restored it the way it was when he bought it.
point is, i use this same meathod in the sled restoration world now my self. it sounds like you have a pretty cool sled with some history. i think there are sleds out there just a nice clean up maybe some paint but leave it some what looking original with battle scares and modifications that should be left alone and the history of the sled can stay intact. and then there are some sleds that you pick up that really nothing has been done except abuse and nonsense done to them. restore them sleds, but i think leave some of these cool sleds to a minunum restoration, more like a clean up resto.
with the info you gave, i think a nice semi restoration, and some clean up would be a good choice!! just my 2 cents!!.

Same boat as you Ed, being the build has to start from a bare tunnel, no bulkead etc., its hard not to go full bore as long as you've already have every part disassembled and in boxs. I really don't have the time to search for as many NOS parts as you can find in order to do a A+ resto, so I am just cleaning & freshening her up best I can in hopes that I can get her done for Waconia. There will be some battle scares but oh well, motor & drive train will be fresh and will be ready to race or run down the trail. Next owner will have a very easy show resto if they want. I'm not quite sure yet but mine might even have to be judged out on the race track at Waconia.

Mark if its most popular I'm finishing last, lol...it's not real bad but will take a lot of sanding and polishing to get that mirror finish. I like hoots idea judge it on the track. I do have an nos track and getting stuff powder coated.

It's my understanding that judging is to be done on 'workmanship', so it shouldn't matter whether it's a restoration, custom, or clone or whatever. My .02c worth.

If it is built as a (as raced sled) battle scars will not make any differance. Unless it is all busted up. The hard part might be finding judges that can judge that way.

I kinda liked Tonya Harding, she knew how it goes. It was her boyfriend's shoddy workmanship that did her in.

Fix it up as much as you can but leave it with the......was raced look to it. Once everything is polished up and 100% perfect you won't ever be able to shoot the bull with people and say hey check this out , and check this out , WOW look at this !!! Its yours do as you please. If it was mine that's how I'd do it. I'm not out to impress anyone anyways.

Tonya was an American figure skater. Are you with me so far? Figure skating is a judged contest. Supposed to be about skill and athletic excellence. But all things being equal, it's really a beauty contest. She was up against Nancy Kerrigan, a very pretty girl, taller too. Tonya figured the deck was stacked against her so she got her boyfriend to kneecap her rival with a ball peen hammer. I'm not advocating kneecapping but a race sled is not a beauty queen. I can't blame Ed for being reluctant to remove all traces of his Rupp's history.

Why thanks Mark, sometimes I just don't savvy your Cunuck wisdom.
By the way I think you just volunteered to be a judge.

Wisdom is objective. Disqualifies me from judging.........I have a friend, was a Rupp guy back in the day. He bought a 23 T-bucket that was built by a guy who owned a chrome business. It was awesome, except for the sbc part. He took it to a show and got kicked in the teeth. Entrants ONLY voted on the cars, but not on their own car, of course. So it was fair? He didn't know anybody in the car show "community", so the welcome wagon passed him by. I've been avoiding the "show" business ever since.

Thanks Mark now all I need to do is find two more Judges. I am still working on the Guy's up north to come on down and be a judge too. Yep 3 should about do it.
