My recently purchased 71 400 Magnum has two sets of holes on the ski to mount the shock. Two bolts holes on left side and two bolt holes on right side. One set of bolt holes isn't used. Is this correct for a 71. I don't remember the extra holes on our Magnum and Nitro we had in 71 & 72.

This is correct. Either ski could be used on either side.

I believe that there should only be one set of holes on each ski. One left ski and a right.

I'm guessing at some point Rupp figured out to punch both sides with holes so that the ski inventory at the dealer could be cut in half both are correct.

I should have looked first. I have sleds with their original ski's.'70 Sprint,'70 440X, 71 440 Sprint and 71 440WT with no holes for shock brackets. A 72 American, holes one side only. One pair of loose ski's with holes one side only. '71 Magnums, holes both sides.Recently picked up a 72 Nitro, no holes its ski's, but probably from an earlier year. A 76 Nitro, no holes with shockd mounted above the leaf springs. All the other ski's I can find are drilled both sides. My NEW guess is, if the sled came stock with shocks, the ski's would have been drilled both sides.

I'm with Josh, 71 Magnum, holes on one side. Might be dimples on the other side where the holes would be, but not drilled.

So to answer the original question, if your 71-72 model had shocks, and ALL 73-78 models have two sets of holes for shock mounting. As Wes and Ed said, ski could be used on either side, wonder if that gave you an option of where you could mount the shock?

I stripped a pair of ski's that had 2 shocks per ski. No doubt, some sled owners wanted to update their rides with shocks.A Rupp dealer would have been happy to sell him the parts.

early on i think rupp made the chrome skis's all kinds of ways until they figured it out, lol. i had chrome ski's with no holes, holes on one side only, holes on both sides and holes on one side but dimples on the other side where holes could be.
