Soooo...the headlight was out on my '76 Nitro 440, and I replaced it last night (as well as a burnt out side marker). Didn't get out on it until tonight, started it up and the taillight, one side marker (the bulb I used was bad, on the other one!), and the headlight came on with the key in the middle position. Rode around for 10-15 minutes, and came in to find that the taillight was out. So I replaced the bulb with a good one (as well as the bad side marker). Started it up, and side markers and headlight came on with the key in the middle position, BUT the taillight wouldn't come on unless the key was in the "run" position (and then the other lights are, of course, out...) A bit confuzzled by this?!!?

At first I thought you might have a bad voltage regulator. I'm thinking that maybe your tail light harness is plugged into the PC board backwards ??

I think you were right! I turned the plug upside down, and now the taillight comes on with rest of the lights!!

Looks like your first thought was correct.... Went for a short ride last night, blew taillight, and headlight was very dim....so I dug out a voltage regulator that was still attached to a steering hoop from Nitro II parts sled I got from Magnumed, cleaned it up, and swapped it. Now all the lights work properly!!

Them voltage regulators can do some serious damage. I had one let go one time and it fried my tach and every light on the whole sled !!
