pickecd up a 77 440 as a donor sled for my 76 magnum. Im not restoring this sled to be exact but I'm going to drag race it locally. should I change the head to a 76 or leave the 77?? I'd just hate to get it done then have guys poop on my sled cause the motor does not look right. What do you guys think?

Roger, I dont see anything wrong with using the '77 engine in the '76 Magnum,.....since both engines/sleds were always rated as "B" stock. It would be the equivalent of installing a '74 XA engine into a '75 GPX that came from the factory with a XB engine. Both engines were rated "C" stock. At least that is how it would be viewed at our drag races here in Minnesota. By the way using a '76 head on a '77 engine will kill the compression,....as the '77 cylinders have a higher exhaust port height and need the smaller chambered '77 head to build good compression. At least that has been my experience.

i have cc both 76 and 77 heads found no difference in volume , i would use the 76 head it,s thicker hold more coolant more ridged wont warp as easy, i have head gaskets in .043 and .059 thicknesses , oringnal 77-78 one hole reed pistons had a dome that was .025 taller than a 76 piston, the oringnal 77-78 head gaskets were thicker than 76 heads gaskets, i wound have the 76 head milled flat use the ,043 head gaskets, check sqiusch with sodler adjust squish to .050 by milling more off the head ot turning off the bottoms of the clyinders, also have base gaskets in different thichness, if you need to adjust some port t iming issues, all kinds of combinations to raise compression and adjust port timings, a engine of mine has a zero deck { piston even to the top of clyinder atdc} .043 head gasket head milled -020 from stock has 165lbs compression runs on ethonal free 90 octance fuel well , kevin
