Has anyone tried taking a fan cooled Tohatsu, any size & making it a FA?? I was looking at a TR340,would be really simple to take shrouding off,cut the fan junk off & retain recoil. I think it would look cool, but don't know how long it would last.Any ideas, yes,no,don't care etc? ?

As long as it is cold out and sled is moving I would think it would be alright. You might want to help motor with some air ducts. Making sure air is moving directly to the motor.

Not specific to tohatsu motors but I have read and been told that removing the fan assembly and the drag and weight from the motor can cause harmonic imbalances, which causes a the motor to vibrate violently. I have never done it so I cannot offer any first hand experience to this.

I saw a single Sachs 340SS converted to FA,fan housing & shroud removed. The guy said it ran ok.Hirth 634's are hacked up quite abit, made into free airs. Just wondering.Does anyone on the board have one??? Thanks.

I converted hirth to FA but not tohatsu I've wondered if you could machine a head to make it like a wedge motor. But I just don't know if a regular fc would work cuz of the heads being turned

Ruppsforever, have you had any cooling issues? Is air coming in where headlite was? NO duct work? dacota25d,that is really cool. There is a sledder over by Perham,MN that cuts all the extra fan stuff off. He makes the cases look like the Red Baron ones,NO recoil, just a rope to start. I'm sure others have done this, keep the pics coming!! Thanks.

But yes we trimmed the headlite area out to make it get as much cool air as we could.

Old old school. Cut off the cooling shroud, turn the fan blades off in a lathe, raise compression, run methanol and a megaphone, hack a big hole in the hood.Go kart guys did the same to chain saw motors.Wiseco and GEM were already in business before sled racing took off. Then the manufacturers started making free air sleds.

I remember McCullough,(sp?),I think they called them Mac's back then. Methanol helped replace the lost fan cooling.

This is a 634 that was machined down by the late Evert Reagle he was the head of the widow makers race team in the '70's Gene Bloom called him a super wrench . He also machined the piston skirts as he said the engine would not last long without it. He had several hours of testing with these engines and they won a lot of races.

Hard to believe those little engines would haul a go kart around. Cant be all that much horsepower i wouldnt think.
