I went down to SD & picked up a Rupp in May.It is a SD sled, last licensed in 1978,so probably all that time outside,it looked every bit of that. When I got to the place,he also said he had a JLO single,we agreed on a price and he tossed that in the back of the pickup. I have just now, started to work on this engine. So far,it looks pretty good.I'll have the jug & piston checked for wear.It could end up in one of my built sleds.I'm getting ALL this NEAT stuff,as I start thinking of slowing,WAY DOWN!! I have been corresponding with another sledder, who has sent me some pics,to compare with mine.So far, mine is the real deal "R295",same as the pics he sent me.I have waited 9+ years for one of these, potent, little engines. The porting is something else in this engine. It's only fitting, that I get one of these at the end of my full circle.

The exhaust[with homemade crooked pipe between the jug & header pipe] is complete, looks ok,it will have to do. Still have to elongate the hole around the exhaust pipe.

I saw those,he said that they are starting to curl/yellow & might need more "adhesive".I don't know what that means. I have the Magnum word decals & 400/440 number decals.Ed,do you know how many 70 Magnum 295's were made? I know of 5 such sleds. 3 are in MN,one in NY & one in ME.Tough sleds to find.

I don't know how many, maybe Jim Binkley would remember. They raced them.

I have one of those 1970 295 Magnums and parts to build 3 of those engines. One engine is a true "R" the others are "L" with the "R" head and cyl. One day I'll have the time and money to build it.

jason, what state are you in? Today was a day spent in the garage on this sled.It just didn't want to run, after the sprayed gas was gone.It wouldn't pump.I had that carb off many times,it checked out ok,BUT I must have missed something.Every time I took it off & put it on,it wouldn't run.Yup,pickup line was in tank=ok.But gas was draining back to tank.I finally called a fellow sled head & he suggested putting a primer bulb on,nope still wouldn't run even though there was plenty of gas TO carb.I had another carb on the bench,I had just put new gaskets/diaphrams in,put it on, gas went through the carb & out the return line.Started, pumped gas & stayed running.Made some adjustments & it's good for now.Final adjustments will be made when the snow gets here.It was a productive day.I will change out the primary clutch spring.I set this up like my Sachs SA290,as far as clutch was concerned. But,I will still wait to do that.

I'm in west-central WI. I got this sled over 30 years ago for parts, just wanted the drive shaft. I stripped it down and stored it. Didn't know what I had till few years ago. missing the muffler, it was rotten. I planed on putting a tuned pipe and Mikuni carb. should make a little more HP then stock. I should have some time when the kids are out of the house (3 long years to go).

Ya, that's the HP rating I was told also. The 297-L, I thinks is listed at 19-21 hp. I got that sled for $25 just to get it out of the guys yard. His kid would drag home all kinds of junk. I needed a drive shaft for my Dads Yankee at the time. It's all there hood, belly pan and alm bumper, hell even the tool box is there and in perfect shape. Will need to find a track and recover the seat. I'll try and get a few pics this weekend, but it's the gun-deer opener here, got to get the boy in the woods.

also note, I got one of the 297-L's with the R cyl and head, off of evilbay for $40, shipped from Green Bay to me, very good deal. Bought the whole sled, it was a mid-70's cat, told the kid to keep the sled and ship the engine. he was more then happy to.

Finally, after letting sled sit for a week,my friend woodchuck came out & found a few things wrong with the sled.We changed out both hi/low carb adjusting needles, runs pretty darn good now!!!!! Also found the trouble with the tail light, that works now. Also found out why recoil didn't work right, fixed that, good for now,but still needs some fine tuning.A very productive night. Will fine tune engine when the white gold comes.I've had lots of patience, when working on this sled,& now it looks like it may have turned out ok.Time will tell when its in the snow.I have 4 sleds that have not seen the snow, since I completed them.It will make for a fun winter, providing we get snow.

This sled went out today for the first time, but not without problems. It runs great, sounds awesome. Ran it out of gas about 1/8 mile from home, went & got pickup & towed it home.Put gas in it & tried to start it,nope, the recoil had given up,all kinds of pieces laying inside it.I will have to try & repair the recoil. This little 295 single, goes QUITE WELL,it is fast!!! This is after I towed it home & took recoil off.
