I removed the crank in my 72 400 nitro to replaced the seals. The two spacers on each side of the center bearing move all over the place. One more so than the other, is that normal? The parts book shows I need #20418 crank. I have a nos crank #20598 that looks identical but I have no idea what engine it fits. I opened the nos crank and the spacers on it also moved around just quite not as much. Do I have two bad cranks or is that normal? What engine does crank # r20598 fit? Thanks for your help

Everything is supposed to fit TIGHT in the case halves. To me,it seems normal, but I have only had one Tohatsu engine split apart. And I can't remember if there was movement or not.It did seem that the center seals or spacers, had rubber "O" rings to help seal them,in the case.Do you have any pictures of this? Without pics,my reply is a stab in the dark.

It's normal. If the crank is the same size it will work as all of the 1972-1973 400 440 cranks will interchange

71-72 400-440 S-S2 motors used 20418 cranks.73 400-440 S3 uses 20508. 73 TR440-3 uses 20598. 72-73 cranks were discontinued. Went to the 20418. The 71,72,73 400-440 S series cranks should be full circled. The 440 TR crank should be hacked out. All specs on the cranks 400-440's are the same.

Bob are you sure the S series are full circle? I thought the SR was the only full circle crank.

Rick, I stand corrected. The full cranks were in SR's.In the past fifteen years. I've found a full circle crank in a 72 Nitro and a crank full circle on clutch side , hatch out on mag side. Wonder if it ran, OK??
