Since I have never changed the plugs I decided it was time. I did a little research and found the the Champion L20V plug was the correct plug (i think). Below is a pic of the plug I pulled out vs the new plug. It sure looks to me like the plug that was in there had way too much of a reach on it since half of the threads are black. I did a quick measurement too and there is definitely not a need for a plug that long. I always figured they went surface discharge for clearance issues but apparently that's not true. I have also run surface discharge in my race car due to the fact that they resist fouling much better. My guess is that's why they were used in this engine too.

That's exactly what I thought! They were in there before I got the sled so who knows. I have a bore scope, I'll have to take a look for any suspect marks.

They won't hit the piston. I have picked up a lot of Rupps that had the 3/4" reach on them and none ever hit the piston. Now if the head has been shaved down that might be another story.

I've seen a lot of short heads with long plugs too. The biggest risk is the edge of the threads getting hot and causing deto.

I guess there are people out there a lot more daring than I am !! I would never even think of running that strange combination. WHY ??
