Was it for a motor with points? If so my Dad was VERY good at doing this and I might be able to help you. He was good at setting up the 71 and 72 motors.

I just got my book out to start typing you some information. But, your post just put an end to that. I have info for points on the TR-295, TR295S, TR-340, TR-340S, TR-400S-2, TR-440, TR-440-2 and TR-440S-2
I will post degrees and gap specs in-case some one else can use this info.
Note: * = Degree's
Before Top Dead Center
TR-295, TR295S, TR-340, TR-340S Full Advance 22*- 25*...........0.102 - 0.131 inch
TR-400S-2 Full Advance 22*- 25*...........1.114 - 1.147 inch
TR-440 Full Advance 25*- 28*............0.149 - 0.189 inch
TR440-2 & TR 440S-2 Full Advance 22* - 25*...........0.114 - 0.147 inch
The Dial indicator would be screwed in to the spark plug hole to locate the piston at the correct timing position.
Dave.

I dont think i can explain it in the best possable way. Brandt or Bill may be able to give the best understanding of this. I spoke to Brandt about 1 year ago on this subject. Lets just see if either of these gentleman will help. Dave.

If it's CDI I would use a timing light...you could make timing marks using the dial indicator and shoot them with the light to see where they lined up and adjust the stator accordingly...but that's about all it would be good for.
