This year was a blast at Pequot! There is so much to tell and so little time. One Friday was the ride. We got up there with about 10 min til the ride started. We got our sleds unloaded and waited for the start. I left my 250 idling to get to running temp while Dave Gunther, head of the show, had a short speech... I got back to my sled and found that it wasn't running. I figured someone had killed it for the speech or something like that. I tried to start it, it ran for a few seconds and died. I called my dad over to help slove the problem (it was our best running sled (still is)). We check the usual suspects: plugs, carbs, etc. Still nothing! Some genius said, "Ya got gas?" I said yes because Dad and I had assumed it was full. He forgot that I took it out to my friends a few weeks ago, and he rode it a lot after I left my uncles (I didn't remember he rode it). So we open up the tank, BONE DRY! We fill it with gas quick and mix it up, she started up. DENNIS has a pic of the dry tank. After that virtually everyone took off and I figured she wasn't mixed up enough because I wasn't moving too fast. I checked to see if it was running on both cylinders, both were hot to the touch. A few people came and helped out as I saw the family drive off. They asked about the plugs and cylinders, I said they should both be fine. Turns out a carb had froze up or stuck dur to it running dry. I had to run to the trailer and use the I500 sled! When we got back, dad fired up the 250 and she ran fine! The next day the show was held, it started as rain and turned to snow, so we had to dust off the sleds quite a bit. We also ran the go joe back and forth to prove to people that it ran and ran pretty well, still needs a lil work. We chatted with a few people and judges. There were some pretty sweet sleds there. My favorite was the Corvair (corvette sled). I'm not sure if Dad took pics or not, but I didn't, wish I did. There are a lot of pics posted on www.Vintagesledders.com under the shows tab. We went inside for the banquet and awards ceremony. We had 2 guest speakers. Lee Busse and Scott Eilertson. They were the 2 americans in the Minnesota to Moscow ride. They had a wonderful presentation and followed the awards with a signing of posters (limited in numbers). They also acted as guest judges. The family (minus me this year) got the award for best costume aka best vintage apparel. It is the 4th year in a row. Even better, we finally won an award for one of out sleds! We received best vintage original award for our 76 Nitro 340 I500 sled that was raced by Dad's uncle, Eldon. We had my name on the registration but I think dad deserves the award more, he was the one who cleaned it up. Best yet, I got one of those signed posters and got to chat with both the guest speakers. It turns out that Scoot was there at the I500 in 76 and said he remembered seeing that exact sled start the race! They both commented on how they really liked Rupp's looks, performance, and innovation! They were a pleasure to talk to and hope to see them again to talk with t hem more. By the way Dennis is planning on posting the pick of the dry tank, I'll defend myself more after he has what he wants to say about that.
