OK, I finally started taking my 75 F/A apart and quickly ran into problem number one. The muffler, (squirrel cage looking thing) is plugged. Don't see any evidence of mice but who knows? Anyone had to take one of these apart? Any suggestions on how to take it apart or fix it without doing so?
I was surprised on how heavy it was, maybe 5 lbs. or more. Whats inside these things?

Usually rust...but maybe a mouse nest. Smell it, does it smell like mice. It is probaly just that heavy. I can weigh one if you want. 340 or 440 can, right or left.

Thanks redleader, my good one weighs 6 to 6 1/2 pounds and the plugged one weighs 7 pounds. Doesn't smell like mice. Smells like burnt oil. I'm wondering if these things are full of oil soaked fiberglass? Maybe I could soak it in some sort of degreaser.

Those things are HEAVY. I've often toyed with the idea of simply replacing them with a bent piece of pipe ("stinger") that would slip-fit over the end of the tuned pipe.
Anyone ever try this?? Yes, I know it would be loud, but is there enough of a change that I'd have to worry about re-jetting?
