Hi Folks, i need some help please.
76 alouette Brute 340 (nitro)
Im re Assembling, I got the sled in Pieces, so im not the one who took it apart, thus putting it back together isnt as easy as its been in the past. Im putting the secondary clutch back on.
On the jack shaft, taped on for safe keeping, were 5 or 6 spacer/shims. ive left those on the inboard side of the clutch/helix.
when the clutch is slid on the shaft with the key, i still have almost 1/2 inch of Jack shaft sticking out past the OUTSIDE face of the clutch, so once the retaining bolt and flat washer are installed, the 2ndary slides back and forth on the shaft...im thinking that cant be right...
i either need more inboard shims or i need to shim the outside...
or both depending on what the clutch alignment measures are....
so...
Any advice? does this seem like a lot of shims to you ? should the shims only be onthe inboard side? or does it depend on alignment (and what are those alignment /offset measures?) does the center of the 2ndary just align to the inner face of the inside sheave of the primary? Anyone Done this before aon a 76 Nitro Anyone Have a Shop manual that spells it out for a 76 Nitro (and is willing to email or post the info.
thanks in advance for any help !

Dave, you will find if you loosen all 4 motor plate mounting bolts you will be able to move the entire engine left/right as needed. You will probabley need to loosen or remove the exhaust system to get the full range of adjustment. After you are satisfied with the clutch alignment only then do you bolt up the exhaust. It really doesnt matter how many or how few washer spacers you use on the jackshaft,....all that really matters is that you offset the primary and the secondary sheaves 1/2 inch. I have always preffered to mount the secondary flush with the end of the jackshaft and move the engine as required until proper clutch alignment is achieved. If you need addition washer spacers just go down to your local hardware store. As whether or not to allow the secondary clutch to "float" on the jackshaft or mount it solid, this is a personal preference. I have always mounted the secondary solid. Others believe that by leaving the secondary clutch loose and allowing it to float, the cluches have a better chance of maintaining alignment under load. Either way will work. The most important thing is to get the sheaves aligned as close as possible with a 1/2 inch offset. Hope this helps.
