Hello Everyone, I'm new to the site and snowmobiles in general. I found a Rupp snowmobile that someone was giving away. The only problem is they did not know the year or make. After washing all the leaves and gunk off I noticed "Nitro 340" slightly raised in the fiberglass hood. What is the best way to determine the year? I found the serial for the engine and frame but couldn't read anything else on the engine plate. Any additional info would be great, Thanks

With a fiberglass hood with the engine size info, it should be a 73 or 76. If it's a fan cooled motor it's a 73. If liquid, it's 76. Now if the numbers on the hood aren't stock, could be anywhere from 73-76.

The engine serial number is 351766 not sure what kind, the plate with the serial number was unreadable if there was anything else written on it, thankfully the serial number was stamped in. How do I figure out what kind of engine I have?
The hood is red and black, one piece that hinges open, see picture
I didn't notice any thing that looks like a radiator or other parts associated with liquid cooling so I'm guessing its fan cooled.
I was looking at the scanned manuals on this board and noticed several Years of Nitro 340, is the hinged fiberglass hood a dead giveaway for a particular year or is the type of engine a better way to determine the year?
Thanks again for all the info.

it's a 1973 Nitro, with a Tohatsu engine. It's been converted to a Mikuni carb!! Thats a fan cooled engine. Tohatsu made a good engine. The type of hood,is a better way to identify the year. A 72,had a center hood, with doors that opened up on each side. 1971 had a hinged hood held on with hood pins. 1970 had a hood held on with hood pins. The 73 had a hinged hood.

Oops, I was tired and jumped the gun. I went by the material the hood was made from and that the sticker left the numbers raised on the hood. With that being said only 73 had a fiberglass hood with the 340 on the hood. 76 it's on the lower panels.
Yes you have a 73. You would find the engine tag normally on the right hand side of the engine shroud or on top of the engine shroud near the spark plugs. I would double check that just in case it isn't a nitro motor. The engine should be listed as tr340s-3

Awesome so 73 Nitro 340 it is.
"It's been converted to a Mikuni carb!!"
By your response I'm guessing its a good carb?
Wow i'm impressed by how much everyone know about these. Thanks for the help, I'm sure I'll be back with more questions as I try to get her running.
