Ok, I had some problems with my TR340-3,it lost power & killed in driveway. Wouldn't start back up. There was lots of noise coming from the Mag side. The engine is out of sled & on the bench. I checked the hi/low adjustments, low side of carb, was 1 1/2 turns out. The high side was only 3/4 turn out. Could the high side have been too lean at 3/4 turn out??? The plugs looked black/wetish. Ok, the engine I put back in the 70WT,was a TR440-3 engine,40hp. I checked the plugs,#1 was brownish/tan,#2 was black/wetish looking, both low/high speed adjustment screws are 1 1/4 turn out. What should they be??? Also what plugs should I be running in the 440? Should I run a surface gap plug? Anyone help me out Thanks.

you can't read a surface gap plug, try a EV equivlant, small wire. They can be read right away.Look at the center eletrode, with a magnifing glass,if the plating is cleaned off only on the very end,its fat,if its a 1/4 of the exposed lenght to the porcelin its right on.1/3 of the length its lean.run at clutch RPM,mark plugs p&m 1/4-1/2 mi.hold throttle at that position & hit kill switch, pull plugs & read, repeat in 1000 rpm increaments till wot.before doing any of the above, pressure check the assembled engine to appox.10psi,pluging the ex, & intake & putting regulated air thru the pulse fitting in the cases or in a fitting in the port covers.i have found engines to only leak under a vacuum test, try it both ways.fuel to air ratio should be1 fuel to 14 air, steel will burn in a oxy .atmospher

I dont think 3/4 turn should kill a motor unless it was -35 degrees out !

3/4 or 1 turn out dosn't guarantee correct fuel delevery, especially if the engine is not sealed or fuel delevery to the carb is limeted.

Yes,fan cooled engines. I pulled the mag side apart, nothing wrong there. BUT the PTO side,oil/gas everywhere. It was on the engine mount, tunnel, chaincase;the area below seal was quite wet.I'm thinking seal was BAD,it burnt down the piston, impregnated head with all kinds of debris & scored the jug. Anyway,I have a parts engine now. All the useable ignition parts will find it's way to another 295 or 340. Just out of curiousity,I started the TR440 & sprayed starting fluid around the clutch & intake, nothing. Ran good. Also put in a set of MATCHED spark plugs, will test tomorrow.
