I thought I would post a pic of the NOS 71 sr 650 tohatsu while I gave it the annual oil up. It will go in a sled one of these days.

I have an alternate suggestion for that motor; kind of a "what if" sled. What do you think of a Nitro FA chassis with jackshaft assembly and custom 3D glass with this motor! I believe Rick has a similar sled with sunburst head Kohler 440 twin.
It could be the "3D Extreme"

Ed thats an awesome engine!! But i never knew you were also into collecting Stihl Chainsaws! Both my sons and I use and I guess collect the stihl chain, all three of us have the outdoor wood burners. I use the smaller 460, Ed and Ben upgraded to the 660s. I wouldn't have another brand of saw. Back to the 650, I would say the most powerful and durable engine Rupp ever used. I will get some pics of comparison of the 600 and 650 tohatsu crank shafts..........(mcruppin) John you should have stayed longer on your visit! Next time.

Ed, if I stayed any longer I would have become one of those bad tenants/squatters that never leave.

Here is a shot of the 600 and 650 crank, both new cranks just the 650 someone needed the bearings off the pto and mag side, you can see that the 650 required double bearings on both ends where the 600 was a single bearing. The 650 also had more aggressive cylinder porting. Gene Bloom did mention he was the only one to have the 650 tohatsu. John your welcome anytime......

thanks for the crank pictures, if they would of had used the best engineering of both cranks , if the 650 could of had double main bearings in between the cylinders like the 600 crank in the picture tohatsu wasted alot of time to get things right, or they were trying to keep the cost of the engines down, there are alot of different combinations and updates on tohatsu cranks thru the years with rupp, i guess what could have been, not kicking tohatsu engines vary rare stuff on the 600 and 650 tripples, ed do you have a 440 tripple tohatsu also? thanks for the pics kevin

Bill You have the heads? I know of only 3 complete original engines all in Michigan. But you know how things can pop up from time to time. does anyone know of others? I will get pics up of the 440 triple some time today, Ed (bankRUPPt) can chime in on that one..........

i have two 650's, #10 in the picture and #1. #10 was just case and crank, #1 was case crank and cylinders. i sold one complete engine to another guy in mi. witch i heard you ended up with it ed. that was a complete engine. i have heard there are only 10 of these, is that correct. does anybody have a # higher?? i do have 1 orginal head i believe. it looks to be a 71 sr head cut. fits the cylinder. is that what they did or di they have there own heads?? the other heads i first used and could have used more of would have been 73 magnum heads and i didnt want to cut those up. so i had the billet ones made. thats what i meant by original heads.

Ed owns serial number 4 I own serial number 2 both complete 650s, the second 650 I have no serial number, the mag housing is similar to the 440 picture attached. the serial numbered 650s have 71 sr right hand heads shaved off to fit the triple, the one with no serial number has 600 magnum heads and I think it is the first 650? My guess only. The 440 triple tohatsu has to be the rarest of all tohatsu engines.

That 440 tripple is definatly a rare engine. I spoke with a previous owner of that engine a while back and we never did figure out what sled if any it was ever on. Do you know what sled if any it was ever on? Thanks for shareing those pictures also!
