Hey guys wondering if any of you have any ideas for a better hydraulic break for my superstock oval sleds. Currently i am using the Willwood Billet Spot Caliper. Seems like the small little pads dont last very long at all. Now remember it is a superstock sled so i am running stock chaincases. 1 is a 75 nitro and the other is a 76 nitro. Any ideas would be great.

Hey Luke, On the 76,you should be able to swap out the chaincase for an Arctic Cat chaincase that is already set up with hydraulics?

I have a pile of those around here but not sure if id get busted or not. I should go that route. I just got another chaincase and brake off a 99 zr 600. Chassis is for sale if anyone is interested!

Since it's a vintage cat chaincase. Perhaps the Kelsey Hayes will work? At least it's vintage so you shouldn't have to worry about getting busted

The Kelsey Hayes is identical to the new willwood billet system that i am currently using. I think i might just try and swap out the chaincase. Hopefully i dont have to change out the drive shaft or jackshaft. Maybe Elvis could let me know that.

You can put a Kelsey Hayes or older Polaris juice brake on any Rupp that has a disc brake. You can still use the OEM Rupp chain case and the brake caliper side that does not move. You can see it on the 3D I put one on the REBEL that has a 76 Rupp jackshaft set up on it. I think if you were to use the single puck brake you might start to get some brake fade before the end of a race.

Thats what my problem has been i get real bad brake fade the second half of the race thats why i was hoping to find something with a larger puck surface. I found a brake caliper in one of my boxes of misc stuff that im not even sure of the brand but it might be polaris. The bolt center to center is right on and it has huge pucks. I think it might work because the part of the housing that goes between the brake disc and secondary sheave is very skinny which is typically the problem with rupps chaincase setup.

If you are getting bad brake fade, try using a disk off of a 90s zr zrt or tcat, they have vented rotors and the bolt pattern looks to be exactly the same though I haven't tried it.

Also, larger puck surface doesn't necessarily mean more grip. A larger puck will require the piston in the caliper to also be larger to equal the same force (because essentially you are spreading the load out farther with the same amount of force) OR your master cylinder diameter needs to be smaller OR there needs to be multiple pistons like the newer style wilwood. Please do the required math before mixing and matching master/calipers as it can end in disaster. If your pads are say 30% larger (15% each side) then your caliper piston needs to have at least 30% more force. The calc for force of the piston is pressure x 3.14 x piston diameter squared divided by 4 (use 1000 psi for pressure as a constant) since we don't know actual pressure

I found one of the polaris brake setups in my stash of crap and think i might put a newer cat chaincase on the liquid. So both sleds should be good to go.

this would be good spot for bill to say what he uses on his sleds

He runs the newer arctic chaincases and newer wilwood brakes.

i also ran wilwoods on my 76 chain case's also. that's what i would do luke. if you get caught with a newer chain case they may boot you in stock /super stock classes, i am not surer on your rules though. in super mod, any chain case and brake set up is legal. if you want to run a stock l/c nitro chain case, i can show you what we did to put the wilwood brake set up on.

I am running the willwood billett spot caliper already just seems like the small pads dont last real long and then i end up with brake fade.

I am working on putting a Kelsey Hayes caliper on my Nitro II. I reworked the bracket and ground on the caliper. Had some of the seams welded to stiffen the bracket.
