over a year ago I decided to retire my 650 tohatsu race engine. it was a hard descion to make, but the rarity of the motor made it a little easier to do. so I decided to build a 3 cylinder wide base rs 650 kohler race engine. after investigating this thoroughly, it remains a confusion if kohler actually ever built a 3 cylinder wide base. I talked to some very very knowledgeable kohler guru's!!! some say they built around 10 wide base 3 cylinders and other say not!! after looking for this engine with no luck I decided to build my own. I took 2 75 rs kohler cases, cut them in half and made a 3 cylinder wide base case. I then had northern crank make the crank and line bore the case. I had the cylinders bored and ported the cylinders my self. I had jay sperry build the ignition for it and all I can say is this thing is so stupid fast!!!. it is way faster than my tohatsu ever was. only one problem though, getting the chassis to work with this much power, I had a huge amount of problem's with the other race sled's at the beginning of the season that I never spent allot of time trying to make this sled work properly. it was a testing ground for this any ways for my first year out with it and i am excited to say it works and works very well. the fastest speed recoreded this season with it was 94 m.p.h.. here are a few pics,........
I also built this one, lol,..... a 440 triple wide base with reed cages. I did not run this motor at the track this year, next we will give it a try
