I remember McCullough,(sp?),I think they called them Mac's back then. Methanol helped replace the lost fan cooling. Huh mccullochs from the 60's? I will gave to see what cc'c they all had out there. Hard to believe those little engines would haul a go kart around. Cant be all that much horsepower i wouldnt think. Then you run two of them.

Thats a BIG saw!! Im more wondering about putting one in a kitty kat tho. They would fit easy but no room for 2 engines.

I went to a snowmobile shop today & talked to the owner about FC to FA.He said the total cooling area[fins & how high they are] on a free air engine,is a LOT MORE than on my FC engine. He said it would cool, but would not cool it effectively,to prevent from burning it down.Until I can come up with a head or heads to cool it,looks like it will be a NO go. I guess sometimes a dream isn't meant to come true. It's the THOUGHT that counts, right???

Brings back an old memory, when I was 12-15, my uncle had race karts. He was a big fat guy so had me run them for a cpl yrs as I had been racing a 1/4 midget with punched out 4 stroke. Those little Mac's had some nuts! What comes to memory was Mac 10, not sure if that was the CC or what it stood for but I from what I remember, everyone was racing Mac 10's. My uncle had next step up for when we ran open class, I'm kinda foggy on this but I think Mac 15? They all ran methanol or some kind of alcohol blend? Any way the open kart was a blast, I won about every race with that thing for a cpl yrs against alot of guys that dirt track raced and were way old, to me. Uncle says 2 gotta be unbeatable, so he bolted (2) Mac 15's?, one on top of ea. rear wheel, put it all together in the winter and we went out to local lake(about 6mi, across) to test on the ice. Told me to give her the Beans, so I did with them pacing me about 10ft away in his corvette. I hit 98 MPH with the damn thing and my eyes were froze wide open when I got stopped and they pulled up pissin their pants laughing. Much alcohol was in play on their behalf, I was like 14! Here's what comes next which I will never forget, uncle says get her up to about 75-80 when the motors are really comin on the pipes, cramp the wheel, give her the beans, we want to see how she powers out of turns. I say sure! Do exactly what they say, the lake was froze over but no snow, I started with kind of a slow spin but kept on it, ended radical & spinning for what seemed like an hour, after I let off, Took uncle and his wrench buddy 15 minutes to get out of car they were laughing so hard and spilling their cocktails all over themselves because I was puking all over the kart, myself, and spray painting the ice.

Hoots, that's the best thing I've read on this board, ever. You and your uncle did that without a GoPro or YouTube. Pure fun!

Hi there, back in 72... oh my god this already sounds like an old man story about to begin, but it can't be because I am not an old man, am I? I think with the small head fin surface area it will be hard to cool if you run it any distance as a free air. The ability to reject heat will only get worse as you start to mod it out. There is some nice looking conversion photos I see here. Anyway back in the old days I had a 70 Magnum (15 inch) with a 650 Hirth red baron in it. It ran as a free-air but just did not have enough fin area. After burning it down 3 weekends in a row on gas, a guy at the gas station that ran early dragster rail cars said "youngster you should try running alcohol in that thing". Well after the conversion kits were put in the carbs It ran from that point on with no heat problems. The alcohol allowed us to shave the heads (with a big horse hoof file) more and more till one day the thing started dieseling and the gaskets squirted out between the studs. We made gaskets from some laminated stuff that I got from a guy name Jack Roush that sold parts out of his basement. The sled was not anywhere near as pretty as the sleds you guy's post here. Heck I was so goofy about what it weighed that some structure was made from cut up aluminum lawn chairs. Oh, as referenced in another post by one of the great Rupp people, This was the sled that beat the super sportster both in a 1/4 mile and a one mile run. Back then all drag races including sleds went 1/4 mile, speed runs were a mile.

Hi there, I don't mean to hijack the thread. No, sadly (for me) I do not have the sled. When I was 19 I had to buy a house and the sled was sold to get money for the down payment. Odd part as I think about it today is that an OLD guy about 45 years old bought the sled. My dad knew him and I was told that once a year he got it out and ran it across the lake and back to clean his heart out. After I sold the sled I never looked at another one until I was 52 and my son dragged home a dead snowmobile and said, do you know anything about snowmobiles? Well I tried to get it back at that point but it had been sold at an estate sale two years earlier. Well now vintage sleds are everywhere around here and we are vintage racing them on ovals. After some time off for medical issues we are currently building a supermod 75FA for a customer to race this winter. We also have plans to build other Rupp oval racers.
