I'm doing a little project for my brother, he found some old sleds in a pole barn his company was going to rebuild and got 6 vintage sleds for free. Couple Ski Doo's, Arctic cat and a Rupp. I ended up with a mess of a 71 skidoo tnt 292, he sold the rest and kept the Rupp for him self. I'm gonna try and restore her to rideable condition this winter and thought i'd share the project. Attachment DeletedAttachment DeletedAttachment DeletedAttachment Deleted

Just hope that 72 exhaust is in good shape!! Even if it is rusty, try & save it. Hopefully the track is ok also. That's 2 of the expensive items to find on that sled.Good luck with the resto.

Pretty sweet find for free. The nitro exhaust itself would be a great score for free letalone 6 sleds. Have fun fixing it up! When its done it will be fun. I got a 72 400 nitro and man what a fast fun little sled. Just curious tho where's the mod part cone in..what are you gonna do to it?

I'll have to take more pictures, it has the ski spindle extensions on it and the tunnel has been modified from the previous owner. when I cracked open the motor it has exploded Pistons, so I'm looking for something to replace them. As I said this is my first time hanging out with a Rupp, I'm mostly ski Doo fan. ( starting to really like this little sled)

Hmm the exploded pistons couldbe a issue because the nitro has chrome bores unless you Got lucky and it dididnt hurt the bore

That there is one well loved tunnel! If you are going to rebuild/restore it, you should be able to replace that tunnel pretty easily, as most Rupps were interchangeable, when it comes to the tunnel!

I wouldn't even hesitate, that tunnel should be replaced. Pistons for 440's shouldn't be too hard to find, lots of Tohatsu 440's made! .BUT I'm sure some of the members, have the parts you need. I can't help you out.Have fun with the reclaimation!! ski spindle extensions??

Attachment DeletedAttachment Deletedin the first picture is before, second is after i removed where the ski posts are. Sorry if my terminology is off. they are home made and positioned the ski's farther outward than the stock postions.

I see, said the blind man. They lengthened the spindle beam[bulkhead],for a wider stance.

Well that's a new way to widen a bulkhead. I've never seen anything like that before. Neat

In the past, whenever I brought home a new aquisition,it was sometimes appalling to see what had been done to these sleds,to either keep them on the racetrack or the trail. I do KNOW,that some of the previous owners, should not have had access to a tool box or power tools!!!! Tohatsu TR440 pistons are out there, but it is probably cheaper to buy a complete engine, than just to buy the pistons. That's been my experience anyway!

The 440s pistons are a little harder to find. They are available from time to time. Make sure the bore is good, you may need new cylinders. Someone spent a lot of time modifying that sled. Good luck on your project.

I was wondering if someone could tell me the difference in the tohatsu tr440 and tr440-2 The TR440 is a 71 Trail sled motor, TR440-2 is a 72 Trail sled motor. These motors have a steel bore. If you have either one of these in the Nitro you have the wrong motor. You want the TR440S-2. This is the 72 Nitro chrome bore motor. 440 pistons are getting pretty hard to find. First a persone will need to konw if you have a chrome bore or a steel bore engine.

Thanks for the info. I'm rebuilding this sled for my brother on a 0 dollar budget. It had a tr440 in it and he just pickuped a tr440-2 to replace the tr440 that has a toast piston.

Some of the early TR440's,had 2 bearings on the PTO side,no seal, bearing was seal.Stick with the TR440-2.At least it has crank seals on both ends. At least, the one I had, did.
