I know there are some custom reed valve setups our there so I have a couple questions and I'd like to see what you have done. All of the reed valve engines I have worked on were not a piston port engine like my 73. The only real reason I've been thinking about this is because it would be great to eliminate the fuel spray back from the carb making a mess all the time. That and I know reed valves generally increase the power output/efficiency of an engine.
Pros / Cons? How has it been done? Or is it all just crazy talk that shouldn't be considered

Jay Sperry jr can do it, it's radical surgery but the results are interesting. You can run smaller bore carbs and jetting is easier.Even starting the engine is easier. More bottom end without the bog off idle.

"More bottom end without the bog off idle" That sounds like reason enough to give it a go. I bet it's a bit pricey though if radical surgery is involved. So apparently there is more to it than building a reed block and bolting it between the carb/intake or intake/cylinders. May have to give Jay a call just to inquire.

Not a bad idea, especially if you don't want to carve up vintage cylinders. What Jay does, he does for racing and max power. If you bolt on a reed block instead, you might be adding to crankcase volume. Some of the extra power from installing reeds comes from adding more transfer ports and raising the piston skirt at the intake.

Does anyone have any pictures of this setup by chance? Does jay Jr cut the reeds fairly deep so its more like "molded" into the cylinder rather then just hanging out there. And what kind of potential HP gains could one see compared to a fully raceported piston port motor

Jay claimed his 440 made an honest 96 hp on his dyno. All the transfers were welded and relocated fwd to make room for the Vforce (T-Cat) reeds.C14+ VP fuel, domed heads, programmed ignition. I wouldn't post pictures of it without his OK. He's touchy about stuff like that.

That sounds like one sweet deal but sounds quite pricey at the same time. Ive heard of other sleds that have reeds but not near as much other work done to it.

jay welded a set of reeds on my l/c kohler cylinder's this last summer, turned out great. I did all the porting. richs taylord porting made a set of bolt on reed cages for my kohler triple 440, those turned out great also, makes a bunch of power. I welded the reed cages on my 340 kohler. reeds will make better power down low they claim, better throttle response but on top end full throttle hp is the same even though some reports claim more hp. jay will be more than happy to weld on reeds if someone is looking to do that to one of there motors.

If you want maximum HP,just bolt your engine to Elvis's dyno. What are you getting out of a 440 2RS,Bill?

I don't have a dyno mark, mike wienandt or olav aaen who does most of my dyno work has the dyno's. a real good 440 reed cage motor makes a 115 hp now days. the one thing about tohatsu 440 sr's is that they never make a ton of hp on the dyno but wow are they efficient light weight motors.

115 HP from a Kohler 440 2RS with reeds? For how many nanoseconds? That would twist a garden tractor like a pretzel. Forget the reeds. How much power on the dyno from "a built Kohler 440 2RS with new parts and whatnot"?

this has nothing to do with a garden tractor???. you asked how much hp is a built reed cage 440 making for hp?? call olav aaen today ask him he will tell you, call mike wieandt, he will tell you the same thing, or call doug flannery, I was told his Polaris's are making 118hp, that is what I have been told. a built 440 now days with reeds, at least running 114 octane, correct built pipes, 44 carbs, a 115 hp engine is not that uncommon. the last kohler piston port engine 440 we ever dynode was 108hp. same thing that was built for super mod oval racing. stock form not sure what a 440 kohler 2rs will make. there are reports out there 70 to 80hp stock

I'm thinking the garden tractor comment was meant about the 650 tahatsu topic..

I'm thinking the garden tractor comment was meant about the 650 tahatsu topic.. but that garden tractor would really pull down the straightaway

I was asking about a "built" 440 2rs. Curious about the numbers being thrown around. Thanks for the info.

Great info guys, thanks for all the input! A bolt on reed cage is definitely something I'm interested in. I think a few calls are in order soon

if your interested in the bolt on reed cages, give me a call, I can fill you on how i think they work. I can text you some pics also. I had them put on my 440 triple. rich form rich's taylord porting is a great guy to work with, but there not cheap. after I got them back I changed a few things to my likings but the work and crafts man ship was excellent. shop # 715-592-4707. thanks,.....
