How can you tell the difference between the '71 and '72 TR-440's? I picked one up without a tag and have no clue...

I believe the 71 had a shorter crank case. I had one with 1 bearing and a seal and one with 2 bearings and no seal. I can't remember but I believe it was the PTO side. I think the 71s came with just 1 bearing and was updated to 2 later

The '71 used the bearing with the seal in it on the pto side. The early ones had no pulse line on them .

Thanks guys... judging by the motor mount and electric start I am guessing a '72 out of an American. Just paged through the catalogs and found the difference in the mounts. The '71 still used the pins to hold the clutch cover on while the '72 had a bracket welded to the mount to bolt the clutch cover to.
Will definitely look at the bearings when I open her up.
Thanks!

The 71's that used the bearing as the seal on PTO side, some had a modification that consisted of a bracket, that fit up against the bearing seal,to keep it from blowing out.I've had a couple of those. The last engine I had,I made a bracket to keep the bearing seal in.
