First off I would like to say hi to all my fellow gear heads on this forum. I have been lurking for awhile and finally decided to make myself known.
Last year I pulled a complete TR 440-3 engine out of a barn with plans of installing it into my golf cart. The owner told me he had pulled it out of a old wrecked rupp he had back in the 70's and was sitting there ever since. After tripping over it sitting in my shop for a year I decided to put it on the bench and check it out a little further. After compression check I squirted a little gas in the carb and gave it a pull, on the second pull it fired. I proceeded to mount it to the bench, hook up a fuel tank and a battery and to my amazement it to came to life. Engine ran great !!! Idle down and climbed trough the rpm range with ease. Now with confirmation of a good running engine I began all the fabrication of mounting it into my golf cart.
Last weekend I was able to make some test hits with the cart and was blown away bye the drivability and power. I raced a 600 razor and put 2 cars on it and also raced a 600 Ranger and put 2 bus lengths on that one.
I have a few questions.
I am having trouble on how to charge the battery from the engine. Last night I burned up the CDI box hooking what I thought was a charge wire directly to the battery. Can someone help me out?
Also where would be the best place to purchase another box?
The box is gold in color with what use to be a oval sticker on it. One three wire plug going to the mag and a two wire plug going to the coil. Also one wire that looped back up( this wire had voltage from it when engine was running and is what I used to burn up the box.
Any information I could get from you guys would be greatly appreciated.
