Instigator!!! There's not much to debate. I love the Rupps, but I have a handful of Mercs around in case I want to win~! This baby can run stock class...Right now she engages at 6800RPM. Has 108 30 degree pix, 36 chisels and it doesn't slip a bit. We won't even talk 60' times as guys that run Rupps consider it "unachievable"! It even has a straight angle helix! Seriously, stock for stock the only thing that might beat it in 500' is another twister or a 77 Blizzard, a good running 77 Blizzard. Never mind the mess...there's stuff layin' all over around here

Now if you back up a year and run the 75 sno twister vs the 75 F/A then we have a race that the F/A will win 97.64% of the time. Same engine different pipes. The 75 sno twister ran C stock and the F/A ran B stock in ISR drags back in the day.

This is just a small sample of his sleds, last count there was 78 sleds .He lets you look, touch and photograph

I wish my basement looked like that... What? Mercs all over the place ;D Snosnake might actually smile for a brief second if he got to see your basement As far as the 500S/T. That's a rare duck. I have had the opportunity to see one in person...Even had the chance to buy it. But the price on such a rare beast was out of my league. That museum looks like a cool place to visit!

I have said all along I believe the best chance for racing success running a liquid Rupp would be to use the 76 Nitro and run "C" Stock.

Nitrofa 340,
I believe you are correct. A 440 liquid in C stock would do great. We had one we ran a few times in the unstudded C class. Not very good off othe line but when she got wound up look out.
As for the 76 440 twister in 500 feet. Nada, nothing would catch it. The Blizzard, 77 SRX and Moto Ski Super Sonic would in 750 feet but not in 500.

I don't do any kind of organized drag racing so I'm not going to really argue. Fact is the 76 Merc and the 76 Magnum were manufactured at the time to compete in the same class. You'll find no love for the ISR letter classification system here. 440 liquid. That's the class...

Wow I'm impressed! (NOT)

True. But Merc never really made an attempt at a stock class racer until 74 Either. None the less, I'm sure Mercs were out there trying to compete here and there.
Rupp had a few potent sleds in 71-2-3. And all were forgetten about by 78...The 76 Mercs kept winning races for years after they went out of business.

I will admit the 76 twister is the sled to beat (stock) but I do know of a few 75 F/As that keep winning in there classes yet today. Hey pudden head I thought you were going to call me.

Racing Flashback - Staples Lake Shootout, Comstock, Wisconsin. Feb 25th 2006. It was a cold, clear day. Waconia did not happen that year due to poor ice so this race drew lots of racers. This turned into the "big drag race" that year. There were racers there from 5 different states. Vance was there that day to help me as pit crew. He insisted I "race up" into 440 Liquid Stock with my F/A 440. At first I said "no way" but he insisted. So it was me on the Rupp F/A against 13 other liquid race sleds,....all '76 Twisters and '76 SRXs. Honestly, I was feeling more than a little intimidated before that race began looking at all those Twisters and SRXs. Well, I ran up against that "sea of white race sleds" and stole a 2nd place out of 13 sleds. Yes, I will be the first to admit a little luck was involved,....but taking a 2nd that day in the 440 Liquid Stock class with my F/A was one of my best, most exciting racing memories. I actually won a lot of 340 and 440 Stock and ModStock races that day on Staples Lake, but the 2nd in 440 Liquid Stock really stood out as special. Alot of Rupp guys were on hand to share the day, including Josh and Luke Kronstedt, Paul Romanoski, Dan Westby, Dennis Berning, Vance Elfering, and Tom Peterson, Travis Boesch and Tracy Kruger. All the Rupps ran well that day. We all whooped it up after the races at the bar/restaurant at the edge of the lake. My winnings from the races totalled about $300 in prize money AND Dennis bought me a steak dinner and drinks on top of that. Hell, I even won a raffle/door prize. That was a really memorable day. Maybe we should have stopped at the Casino on the way home. It would be hard to repeat that kind of success again. I guess thats what made it so special.

All this talk brings me to a guestion What rupp model and year was the most dominant sled in its class ? I think it was the 71 400 magnum ? I raced it and it always took another one to beat it . Back then it was all rupps in the finals But in 74 the 400 snowtwister was the racer to have . I sold the twister would never sell a rupp some nice reading here thanks !! I dont think you should compair free airs and liquids or fans against anything else ? The classes got alittle out of wack if you ask me !!

Hi guys, Rupp board newbie here. I have a handbuilt 75' F/A Nitro with a Kohler 650 rs triple. We ran it hard back in the day in mod4, 5, super modified and experimental, by the way I'm Sonny. I raced with Cory's uncle Ronnie for Raymond Kuntz Electric, a division of (ARCO). He been bugging me for a while to sign up and say hello. I understand that the late Sam Sessions F/A 650 was Kawasaki powered. I am in need of 2 pipes, a pto and mag pipe. They were genuine 75' Merc Twister 440 F/A pipes used on it originally.I also need a cdi box for the rs 3 cyl. My boss bought this engine brand new for less than 500 bucks at the time with all ignition and carbs! Thanks guys see you soon! Your 6 years late!!! I was almost going to spill the beans myself but just kept biting my tounge.

Hello. IM new to the site and I am not sure if this is the place to look for this kind of information, but! I have a 295 nitro and I was woundering what kind of RPMs and speed this sled can produce with little or no modifications(at least no expensive ones) Thanks for the help! Sticks

Sticks: Just got done writing on another post you had. Your 295 should run about 7-7200rpm stock, maybe hit 60 or so with a good tail wind. If you want to make it quicker, a 102c clutch tuned properly would do wonders for the hole shot and low end. I think the stock clutch kicked din at about 2500rpm, if you can kick it up to 3500 it will get up and going very nicely. Of course, then there's carbs, jets, pipes, and on and on and on $$$$$$$$$$.
