I just posted in general discussion how I just bought the American 340 well while I search for parts I'm going to tear down the engine and I was wondering if anyone on here has done any performance work to these engines. I'm very experienced with building engines but any prior knowledge would be cool like if anyone knows the stock port timing what rpm theyn made power at a good squish to run ect... thanks in advance and I hope I can help others on here also with any knowledge I have that might be needed.

First ya need to get some 340S chrome bore cylinders. The Nitro's ran them. 73 would be the best year for the cylinders. They are marked TR340S-3.

I don't think the 340s cylinders will fit the regular 340 base. Not 100% sure on the 340 but I know they won't on the 440.

Im sure if i lower and widen the intake some and raise and widen the exhaust port, open up the transfers a little ill get it to rip. Maybe make a set of twin pipes to fit somehow

I don't think the TR340 even put's out 30hp at the crank. If you do go to the TR340-S jug's you will also need the lower end. as Dr rupp said.

well I had a look at the porting and theres definitely room for potential if they don't make 30hp stock it will when I'm done with it. these old sled detuned with their $hitty little butterfly carbs and non tuner exhaust... theres so much room for improvement. a good exhaust can make a huge difference. look at the early ninetys Polaris stock single pipe on the triples the one that looks like a banana. take the indy 650 for example stock is about 95 hp and with a good set of triple pipes they make between 115 and 130 depending on the brand. the deckers (DKR) were the best. I had a set of Aaen race pipes for a indy 650 too that thing ripped it made power at around 9500 rpms

I carved up this 340 motor for my dad a number of years ago. I prefer to carve steel sleeves over chrome. Chrome is a pain in the azz.

I have not tried it but have been told by someone who should know that the TR bottom can be opened up to accept the S cylinders. Joe

Yes you can machine it out to fit.

Or you can turn down the skirts on the jugs to make it fit. I would just go find an S motor clean up the ports and spend your time on the clutching.
