Just curious what some of you guys are running for ETs in 500' and 660'
What should a guy be shooting for to be competetive...particularly in the modified classes

i was just wondering why they were never considered to be competetive ?? as i restore my 76 nitro, i am using the motor parts from a 77, as i look at them the porting on them actually is pretty agressive, with more to be found, i think back to Tracy Krueger and his Magnum at Princeton two years ago, pretty much proves it can be done, im thinking it is very possible to make them liquids compete !

I plan on my making my '77 into a grass dragger as well, I guess we'll find out what they can do. ;D

Snake - don't let Josh hear you say that - his Magnum is pretty mean in the 500ft. Wig

I stick with the 1/4 mile on the lakes, not many of the old sleds can keep up with the liquids over that distance. Quite a few of the new ones can't either. Wig

i cant tell you what times i ran with my stock 76 magnum 440 back when i used to drag race but it beat everything around. the prove is collecting dust on my shelf as we speak. now that i am into oval racing and i decided to build a 250 super mod l/c magnum and that two has beat everything aound. with the right touch and tuning these 76 magnums are as fast as any other sled if not faster most of the time. b.s.

So far Bill you are the only one that has won with a 76 nitro that I know of. Now I do know a mod nitro/magnum can be made to run fast but like I said I have not seen a stock one that will run with a 76 twister.srx or 78 blizzard. Now I have heard rumors of one that just might change my thinking on this but untill so I still say the Green Drippers are MUTTS in 500 FT.

I'm not calling anybody out, I want to know if mine is up to par, or if I should find more speed. Or shove it back to the back and fire up the Twister ;D

I would tell you if I knew. I don't have the space to set up for 500 or 660. Normally i can set up for 400 ft on the pond but this year with all the snow wrecked the pond. 375 ft was the longest I could set up the timer this winter. Its running 5 seconds flat in that distance. But I have alot to be gained yet. I haven't thrown hardly anything at it yet.

OK. Here goes. The best ET times I have ever heard of on a liquid Magnum are from Tracy Krugers modstock sled. I have in my possesion a time slip from the Rochester grass drags back in '06. Wendys best run that day was a 6.02 ET in 500 ft. She also ran a 78mph in the radar run at the end of the day. From common sense and experience I believe this sled should be capable of running a high 5.7 on ice under good conditions. My Magnum stocker has never ran better then a 6.78 ET @ 74mph,....and that was on ice under ideal conditions. But then again,...I did have some clutching and carburation issues earlier this winter which I have since cleared up. It might be faster next year.

Here is your bench mark: 7.4 seconds @750 ft on ice.
Hit that and you are running with the top twisters/srx/blizzards, completely stock.

750'? Seems like an odd distance...! 750 ft was the standard length of a drag race back in the early '80s.

Ok dale you want a response here you go,i have heard many stories about tracy's magnum and what he did with that machine is unbeliveable,he had that thing singing with a set of old beat up throwem in the trash set of pipes that should have never went on a sled,he didnt care what people said about what he was doing and you can see why,he did the opposet throw it on and try it,it may look like crap but if it works go with it.Last i heard tony was going to put a new set of pipes on the magnum.Just one of the great stories i heard about......DENNIS..............

I have never done the drags or the ovals. All I know is that on the lakes the stock Mercs, Doos and Yammis didn't have anything for a plain old bone stock 440 L/C Nitro in a 1/4 mile or over. No contest, not even close. Not until the mid 80's when the higher powered 500's came out, and they usually couldn't catch me either. And you could ride the Nitro in comfort all day on the trails. Just watch out for that one guy with the John Deere I couldn't catch. Wig

I remember 750' drags...you didn't have to gear down much for that distance! Definitely have to agree with Wigman about the L/C Nitro...there was no better stock lake racer until the Indy 600 came out in 1983. My uncle used to run a 76 Nitro and on a long run the SRX, El Tigre 6000 & Blizzard 9700 guys got used to seeing a four letter word out front...RUPP. Maybe it's time to restore that old girl...he's still got it.
