Finally started tearing the '78 Nitro apart. I knew there were issues down under: track is junk, suspension is frozen and I pulled this out this afternoon. Drivers are split where the shaft swelled and shaft is junk. So I'm planning to swap in an Indy skid and track. What can I use for a driveshaft that'll fit?

That is called inter-granular corrosion, the part blows up from the inside out. Generally the cause of it is improper heat treatment.

Thanks, hadn't seen one come apart that way. Reminded me of Toyota trucks frames that seem to rot away in layers. It's really light compared to a steel shaft, but def needs replacing.
