Mark, as usual I am confused with your post, are you asking me a question? Or throwing digs @ me? Lets start with the pipes: you know darn well they were made by Loren M, I had a choice of the originals or repops. I went with the repops because I felt they would show better than repaired originals. Just ask, I don't lie or portray them as anything other. As far as suspension and components, it is as you say a retro-fit 72. It is not wrong. Is it? I was under the impression the 71's suspension was a failure for a multitude of reasons. A fix was initiated, warrantied at the dealer, and also was not a great fix. When the 72 came out with more R&D, Rupp would retro-fit it into your 71 if desired, is that not accurate? The owner of my 800, who was also a dealer in Wheeler Mich., told me that is what they did. He is about 80 or so, maybe his mind is a little cloudy, could you set me and everyone else straight? Will we have the pleasure of hearing your 600 run @ Waconia?

I'm not looking for a fight, just sharing what I think I know. Think about those stingers. Greg showed me a set before they were sent to Loren for copies. I questioned the weird stingers but Greg said they were the real deal.Cory told me he needed a center pipe so I got that done and sent it to him as a surprise. He said thanks but what's with the stinger? Not right,he was gonna put a straight one on.Those straight stingers would have melted an ordinary Rupp suit or boot so I'm guessing they were quickly fixed.Maybe Cory's uncle wore leathers? I believe that a true original maybe the 600 bought by the 2 brothers, one of whom died before the racing season started. It may have changed hands, where is it now? And the answer to your last question, no you won't hear my 600 running at Waconia. Mr.Procrastinator will be a no show.I'll post pictures next weekend of how far I got.

You know what's funny about all this is the AVERAGE JOE BLOW would look at any 600 Magnum and say OH MY that is one HELL OF A MACHINE that Rupp built. So KUDDO's to those that have a sled that resemble's a 600 Magnum, I sure wished I could have one............Remember RED & CHROME is what sets a Rupp Off from any other old snowmobile and makes it unique, sure wish we could get a Rupp Fest Back again, all that RED & CHROME in one place, Nothing Better ..............Rooney

Rooney has the right attitude IMO. My uncle asked for a Rupp dealership after seeing one.He said it was the red paint and chrome ski's that grabbed him.My neighbor is about 30 years young,he was in my shop and saw the chrome ski's.He was impressed that chrome skis came standard on a 71 sled.

I vote Rooney for Ruppfest!! Here's the one I take out to play with.I want to ride a Rupp so I have to update the suspensions usually, my back won't tolerate the 2" of travel they genarally have.Only ever got one negative comment about it and yep, was made by a Rupp purest. Wanted to know why the heck I painted it like that. Guess he didn't notice the short steel ski's, longer track/suspension or tunnel extention. Actually the most common comment I get is "thats the way they should have looked in the first place". You got me, guess they were cat people!

Sorry Ed, My two property's have to many trees for a Rupp Fest, the field Greg had worked perfect, especially when you fire up your 600 magnum to take it for a spin......

We have parallel threads going here about restoring Rupps. So far,no fights! It looks like a saw-off, no one has changed their mind. We agree that honesty is best when selling a fixed-up Rupp. The definition of "restored" has not been resolved.

This is nice to see, I think we can understand that we are all here for the same reasons. Definetly some cool stuff being discussed, specially that Magnum in the other thread. :-)

We have parallel threads going here about restoring Rupps. So far,no fights! It looks like a saw-off, no one has changed their mind. We agree that honesty is best when selling a fixed-up Rupp. The definition of "restored" has not been resolved. This, as you know is a probably a real good way to rip the lid off. To me there are 2 basic things. Preservation: which is what Museums tend to do with a lot of artifacts. Rather than completely tear down and "restore" a rare historical item, they preserve it in the condition as found. With the exception of tidying it up, is it as is were is. Nothing done to it other than maintaining the state it is in.
Restoration: Can be as little or as much as you want to do. It can use all orig parts, NOS orig parts or a combination of NOS and reproduction parts. Then, this ends up going back to what's being discussed here already. My belief is that the rebuild/restoration is what the builder/owner wants it to be, their vision. The next guy to be the caretaker may buy it because he likes it for what is is, or he may buy and recreate it in his own image. I have seen these guys pay $1.5M to have an airplane "restored" which is drop dead gorgeous. Then sell it. The next owner isn't happy with some of it so he spends another $500K to make it what he wants. On and on it goes. Anything is subject to the same rules, sleds, cars, bikes, airplanes---whatever. At the end of the day, the restoration will be what the current owner wants it to be and not everyone is gonna like it.
Then you have an original sled that you use as a rider or occasional rider which probably ends up being a combination of preservation and restoration. Want to keep it in as an original state as possible, but then it breaks. Gotta fix it, so begins the restoration. Whatever it is, be honest about it. Dunno, my 2 bits.

We're not working on Bugattis or Bentleys. There isn't as much at stake here as some guys put on. Pick a rare Rupp,do a perfect restoration, what's it worth? The market isn't very big. Might as well build it to your standards and keep it. Or build it to order for a customer. I'm a nostalgic sled head. I'll never be a paint-by-numbers guy.

I couldn't agree more Mark. The money isn't/wasn't the point. This type of argument or discussion goes on no matter how many dump truck loads of money are spent or what it is spent on. The guy commissioning or doing the job decides what he wants. Not everybody will like it and that is a matter of opinion.... and opinions are like you know whats cause everyone has one.

Just a note of interest.. I took 1st place with the 71' Magnum at a local show Sunday 1/25 in NH (Moose Mtn. 7th. annual) entered in the Pre 75' race sled category. Another Rupp guy was there Steve K. w/ 71' Magnum and took 2nd. He too had a beautiful example of a RUPP. Thanks ruppman! That makes you feel pretty good when you purchase a sled from someone, and win a trophy with it 1st time out. Hopefully someday I can get half the attention that sled got yesterday,, with one of my builds. Steve said there were people taking selfies in front of our machines. Rode it around the show a little, conditions were good, and wow will that thing hook up. The crowd liked the sound,,, I couldn't resist. Voted for my own sled (peoples choice) and have felt guilty ever sense... Had lot's of fun!
