Im just getting into the vintage snowmobiling thing.I just got a 72 rupp 440. Its fan cooled.I would really like to know what it is. I have strugled to find a picture of what i have on all the rupp pages, so any help with that would be great. Im goin to try and get some pics up soon as i can. The real question is, what is the best oval rupp race sled that would be obtainable without spending as much as i would on a new sled? Im going to work twords it but someday i would really like to race at eagle river for that HUGE trophy!!! For now im going to have to make do with the 72 for now. Any advice would be much apreciated!
thanks Kurt

These guys are regulars on this board, I am sure they can give you a ton of tips on how to get your Rupp going FAST! Dave is on the left, Al is on the right. Buy a MERC if you want the best race sled.

Buy a MERC if you want the best race sled. X2 But seriously, if you want to run a Rupp and win the "BIG TROPHY", the World Championship, you're best (pretty much only) option is going to be a 73 Magnum. But you'll have as much or more into it than you would a new sled to be competetive in that class. The only thing that will actually be Rupp is the tunnel and engine castings.

As long as you want to go only 500 feet at a time. Over that, grab a Rupp!

What kind of racing are you looking to do? Drags or oval?

I would really like to do oval racing mostly. I would like to kinda work upto eagle river in mabye two or three years. I wouldn't go all the way there if i didn't think i had a chance. Im pretty low on funds at the moment but slowly I would like to build up what i have.

I'm guessing the "Big Trophy" would be the trophy for the Vintage World Championship. I believe the sleds in this class are Pro Mod 73 and older. Which pretty much leaves you with a 73 Magnum. She won't be competetive in stock form in that class though. Just find a 73 SR 440 engine and build the sled from the ground up. Go to the races and check and see what everybody else is running...You'll be surprised how "not vintage" these sleds are! Buy a MERC if you want the best race sled. As long as you want to go only 500 feet at a time. Over that, grab a Rupp!

what are some things people do to these sleds besides the obvious over bore, pipes, and such?

You could get about anything just as long as it is not a Green Dripper.

what are some things people do to these sleds besides the obvious over bore, pipes, and such? You should really attend a race to see what type of sled you want to build. It doesn't stop at the engine mods. Some of these sleds are basically all brand new parts with the old motors, right down to Wahl suspensions and the latest ignitions. All new suspension and driveline geometry...

Rick I think that the Green Drippers would make great oval sleds. Xenoah's had a great top end.

Josh i don't think a beginner should even think about oval racing a liquid cooled sled. If he wants to oval race start out on a 340 440 nitro II

hi kurt, i am a rupp die hard oval racer and have been for years now.if you are just starting out it would be best to attend a few races to see what is all about. if you are past that point depending on how much you want to spend that is how you will have to pick your class. in the pro classes you can spend $10,000.00++ no problem per sled. in super stock, rules are limited on the amount of mods you can do wich will greatly keep the cost down, stock well you can do some things to the sled but it is very affordable. i have 4 super mod sleds i race every weekend in the winter someware and they are 250l/c (green dripper that absolutley rocks) 340 f/a, 440 f/a 650 tripple f/a. we race all winter long (as long as i am not hurt wich seems to be the problem the last 2 years). you talked about eagle river, we race there every year and love it. for the world championship we have fineshed 3rd 2 times, ( out of 30+ sleds that try to qualify) and what a feeling to make the podium. one thing for sure, like bankruppt said the sleds in super mod went wild and before we had a good ground base of rules there were alot of sleds built that are nothing more than a vintage motor and fiberglass. that is one thing with my rupps they are mostly rupps. no home made exoctic front ends, no deep home made tunnels, ect. ect. they are mostly all rupp and i am proud of it. i would be glad to help out in anyway i can. give me a call. thanks, bill stull 715-592-4707
