Attachment DeletedAttachment DeletedLooking to see if anyone has ever seen or heard of this sled. Normally I wouldn't care but i've had some interesting offers to try and get this sled from me. Makes me think someone knows something about it I don't and when I ask they get a sudden case of amnesia! What I have is an 800 Magnum I found at a swap meet a few years back. A resto had been started so it was mostly apart and in boxes. What is unique is a lot of the parts have been chromed as you can see in the pic. The rest of the steering, hoop, pipes were already sandblasted so I don't know if any of the rest was chromed or not. The hoop has been modified to fit a Comet/Polaris type clutch(clutches were missing). When this is done you have to brace the hoop to keep it out of the clutch when turning. Also rings were added to help with ease/speed when removeing/replaceing pipes. Just trying to figure out what route to go with on the restoration. Was this thing of any importance or just another run of the mill 800 and the guy owned a chrome shop? Any help here much appreciated. Joe

Joe Joe I talked to the son of the late Joel Oberbaugh, Joel raced for chapparell in the 73 season and was killed racing. He describe his dads 800 Rupp magnum as being chromed out and was from the Michigan thumb area. I Don't recall his first name. I have his number if your interested in talking to him. I'm sure he would appreciate talking to you and locating his late fathers sled if this is it. Ed

No they are more than likely not Oberbaugh's sleds, Joel was racing professional for Chap in 73 and more than likely he did not race a 73 Rupp magnum. The reason behind me looking into it is my son bought the 73 magnum..........

Ed, that info would be great. The guy I got the sled from couldn't remember the persons name he got it from. Said he had it for about 15 years before I got it about 5 years ago. Couple other oddities with this sled, their were multiple holes drilled for the front of the suspension. This sled is on bogies and without relocating where the spring locks in I don't see what they were trying to gain unless that would add ski pressure but still keep the track tight? Track looks like a porcupine(ice pics). Pretty sure this one spent some time on a race track somewhere. Also at one time all the magnesium parts were painted black? WTF? I think that would look kinda wierd. Joe

Ed, I forgot to mention it's funny you mention a possible Chap connection. I was given a tip about this sled by a friend of mine that collects Chaparrals. He saw it before me at the swap meet and saw the pipes sticking out of the box and thought they were Chap 800 pipes until he got to look the chassis over and saw it was a Rupp. The two curved stingers had been switched out for straight ones like the other pipe has so he thought they were Chap pipes when he first saw them.
