I thought it was a good idea to share my build for the Waconia build off. I would like to see everyone join in with pictures and comments with their builds. Tag in on this thread or creat your own. I will be posting pics and comments over the next several days.

Ed, looking forward to seeing what the under hood of your sled looks like. Triple octogonal pipes = really bad azz. Who made them for you?

I started with an unusual tunnel and bulkhead Ed found in NY. Several years ago. It had the lowered chain case and 1 inch off set front end. Perfect to recreate the 3rd. Dimension. Even came with dzus fastener springs. These proved to be useful further into the build. This tunnel and bulkhead proved to be Very important to get the correct original look to the 650 3D. Next is the power plant. Thanks to John Holinshead for selling me serial number 7 sno pro 650 rs engine. This engine was taken out of Bud Lee's speedway drag sled. Bud raced the 74 sno pro season for Kohler. Hard to say where it was before the speedway but I'm sure it was in a 74 sno pro. I assembled the engine. The crank was redone and gaskets included, I had to replace one piston and two cylinders and find three star burst heads.

Boy did I luck out I found the 3 star burst heads. I then moved on to the suspension. It was rough. I ended up replacing most of the suspension.

The suspension was a little rough and the aluminum cleated track was in poor condition. It doesn't look that bad but the rear axle was steel and rubber idlers had to go, it ended up with an aluminum spring perch retaining the 73 magnum light weight springs, replaced the rubber idlers with 76 magnum idlers turned down on the lathe, I made the rear axle and drilled the 73 aluminum rails with one inch holes using the worn out rail as a template. I had a 74 American wide track swing arm cut down to fit the 15 inch tunnel.

Suspension done time to move on to the track and engine placement. I need to figure out the engine position so I can make the motor plate and calculate the chain case spacer. Here is what I had to go with. The original race photo.

Now I had to determine where the engine would be placed. The engine had to fit nicely between the lower panels. Consideration had to be given to the handle bar hoop, lower panel fit, chain case location and pipes. The chain case was big. I didn't want it hanging out beyond the bottom of the lower panel but I had no choice so after a day of picture taking and measuring the original 3D I was satisfied on the location. I also cut the motor plate out of magnesium, I used a skil saw and it cut like butter. The star burst heads did not get installed until later. Did not want to take any chances of breaking a cooling fin.

Once the engine was bolted down I started the hard part, learning how to tig weld. I needed to build the chain case extension, cup for the chain case, fuel tank, handle bar hoop and hex pipes. The chain case extension wasn't too bad to weld but it was .250 thick. The rest was .050. Ouch this wasn't going well. Burning through cone After cone I changed to a different tungsten and aluminum and I started to make progress. To save a little time and space I won't post a bunch of pictures but here are a few.

The pipes turned out to be very challenging. Figure the math put it to a hex, angle cut the degree and clock it around to fit, weld it. It was worth it. I was able to do what Gene and Tedd did 40 years ago.

All this along with glass fitting. Unfortunately reproduction glass is not correct for the 3rd Dimension. It does not compensate for the off set front end and the hood is too flat on top. Also the chain case is extended on the 650. So you build more and make necessary adjustments to the hood. 1 solid week on tweaking the glass to fit the chain case, pipes, and handle bar hoop. I'm getting nervous at this point.

ed, your restoration is amazing. i agree that the glass would not be correct for a off set front 3d like your original magnesium sled. the 3d glass that lee fedrickson found was not altered in any way on top of the hood or in the lower sides. it was made from rupp, both side's the same dimension. its hanging on my wall in the rupp shop. any body can look at it any time there here and you will see that it has never been altered. i am not sure how many rupp guys seen the glass before i fixed it up, but there was a handful. it was not off set glass and was not altered. the very front of hood and lowers where cut off, that had to be made but nothing with the top of the hood or the side pods. your sled looks great!!

Sorry for pic rotation. Time for body work and send off to the paint shop. Up to this point other than the drive shaft and powder coating everything has been done in house.
