I would like to see Gene, Tedd, John and Jim come down for the show even if they don't judge. I think the judging will be tricky on this one...............Maybe a couple cat or skidoo guys?

I should add if you are restoring a sled to look nice it will need to look good. The sled should reflect what you are building. I hope this makes sense. again if you have any questions about the build off call me. 507-533-8803..
Ed I think I can find a cat guy and a polaris guy. But I am not giving up on the guys from Alaska.

I say keep it as it is. Its only original as raced until you fix it all up then its the same as everyone else's fixed up sled. If your looking for a trophy than shine it up I personally could give a crap about trophy's.

Give ALL participants a "plaque". ALL trophy's do is pizz off a lot of people. With a plaque,EVERYONE has bragging rights.

It's a build off you have to have a winner for Christ sakes.
If your going to be a cry baby if you don't win this might not be the sandbox you want to play in this time.
Everyone gets a dash plaque when you per register.

Ed,
Kind of a Ford or Chevy question... It's all in what your in to. Currently I am building a Nitro/Rally on an 72' American tunnel, using a 440S-2 and 73' modified skid. Will be using a 72' Ram Horn exhaust. I have stripped entire machine and have had parts blasted and powder coated, and plan to have a custom tall wedge style seat. Plan to polish tunnel to a good shine however not a mirror finish. I will ride this and do not want to maintain the tunnel like that.
The 72' Rally I have has scars however is polished well and I get plenty of compliments on that sled..

No matter how or who judges there will be people who are not happy it's just the way it goes. I'm not so sure I would pick judges who are not familiar with Rupps though. Some people who judge may like a Battle scared sled while others may like clean and shiny paint that's why there are usually different classes for them. With the list of people doing sleds for this there will definitely be some nice sleds there.

I'm not going to look at the list of entrants. I know Magnumed is in, but only because he started this thread. I'll ask Snosnake for a list of the projects entered, then research those Rupp's and the year. I'll ask the owners what they set out to build, then go from there.......

I was under the impression this "sled build-off" was to emulate the old biker build-off as seen on T.V. You start from scratch, Rupp tunnel with serial #, Make it a fully functional, running machine. Sleds were to be built by the contestant, outside vendors can be utilized for parts, services, etc. but NOT for assembly. Like the T.V. show the builders all met at a location, and all the spectators/attendees of that show filled out ballots, which were counted and a winner was named. Spectators voted on a number assigned to that bike, not a name. Seems simple. People walking by will take time out to look over the sleds and choose one they like best, for God's sake it is the largest snowmobile show on earth, you can not come up with a larger group of enthusiasts than at Waconia. So with that said, I assume you can build any Rupp sled the way you want and have just as much a chance as the next contestant. We get to gather, and meet each other, and have some fun over a few beers(iced coffee for me). Why do we need judges? It would be awesome if some of the Rupp pioneers could attend, but if not, lets not use fill-ins. then it becomes a personality conflict. Especially when the fill-in has emphatically stated how dumb this is, won't travel because it is too far, trophies are stupid, won't do it even if nominated/elected etc. Let's zero in on a format/structure now, lets here opinions from participants. Rick has a hard enough job, coordinating this event, making it happen to get us together, lets get on the same page and move forward.

I agree on what mcruppin has said.No judges would be needed, let the people decide who wins. Only have a number on each sled, with no name as who built it. There are many people who vote on who built the sled ONLY. After the winner has been selected, then the names of the participants could be revealed.Just a thought.

No judges have to make a tuff decision. When Rick checks the sleds in, he can decide if they are eligible, motor runs, Rupp parts, etc. All you need is a sign by the sleds stating what is going on with the build off, a pad of paper w/pens, bucket with slot in it. I also like the peoples choice type judging because I joined the build off so that I would have some inspiration to get a cool sled out of the card board boxes and back on the snow but not really wanting to do a museum quality restore and build by all the rules that judges use for the big show. Just sayin not complaining or whining!

People's choice? Look a few posts up... Here, I'll do it for you. I am still working on the Guy's up north to come on down and be a judge too. Rick has invitations out to Rupp celebrities to be judges and you guys think people's choice would be cooler than that? No.

Yes the Alaska Rupp Riders would be the coolest. Some of us have had the pleasure to visit with them at Waconia and Ironwood. Cool stories. I just hope I have enough time to finish the old sled up.

No. My post reads that, if they are unable to attend, Maybe a format used many times on a T.V. show would be an option. Fairly simple to understand.
