72 Free Air Nitro's are sometimes called Magnums, just to separate them from the fanners. Very rare from day one.How many,Ed? They were available only to a chosen few. I don't think it happened.....there is a letter out stating the plan for the 650 triple in 72, I will try and post it when I get it. Gene said he ran the 650 triple in his 71 magnum, he said about 10? Bankruppt would remember. Rumors around that someone has pictures of one from back in the day..........I have not seen these pictures.

I am currently working on a sled and may end up at Waconia with it. That is the plan. I just wanted to get some opinions on how far to take it. It was raced and has some battle scars and wondered should I try and sand all of these scratches and imperfections out of the tunnel and bulkhead or do I leave them and shin it up and call it good? I don't care about trophies or bragging rights I just want to be involved with the build and have some fun. Time is an issue due to all the work everything else needs to get this ready. What do all of you think? Ed, you asked so here is my opinion and 2 cents(don't take me serious). Go all the way Baby!!!!! and open you wallet and spend whatever it takes to build the sled the way you want and take pride with you work. if you want i could give you some tips, but not here you will have to call me. Oh also you said you hope you will have enough time to complete you project(Get of the Puter and get Kracking on this it can be done) if you put your 85% to it you have plenty of time, now that you retired. January is a long ways away.

I have the design photo's of the 1972 sleds, the race sleds are called magnums on the drawings. okayed' by mickey rupp. it's pretty cool stuff. they have listed 340,440, and 650. I don't remember if there were other sizes, it's been awhile since I looked at them. years ago I picked up a 72 race sled, 440 sr engine, serial # 6, very exotic sled. one day I will get it restored. it has the same suspension as the drawings have, coil over shock's in the rear with wheels in the back, not cogs.

The only thing I ever see happen at a people's choice pick-em show is the guy with the most friends there wins. I want to have some honest Judge's to judge these sleds on fit and finish, overall appearances. This would be more on the custom sleds. I know Mark will not pick a person just because the guy is his friend. Hell I'm not to sure if he has any besides there will be at least 2 other judges. If you guys want to go just by numbers on the sled we can do that. I think we should hash things out here and talk about guide lines and Rules or what ever issues anyone may have. I do not know of anyone doing this before and I don't want it to be just another class at the Waconia show. I am sure there will be others to do this at Waconia after this one. So toss out some idea's on this. Rick, Just my 2 cent worth or maybe an opinion that may help you with the Judging decision,Continue to work on the Boy's up north and if they don't come down get your Judges from this board (The Guy's that will volunteer). To complete the judging have all the participant's do the judging also That being said no names with the sleds just #'s would fill in the Board of judges. I think the judges should be fa-miler with Rupp's Not Cat Or Skud personal. Keep up the hard work on this hope this helps. Or Create some options and the ones entered in the Contest Vote on this

I remember seeing a picture of a 72' magnum clone that B.S. built for a guy who had the SR motor. awesome looking machine,, looked like a nitro on steroids. I know,,, posting pictures could be easier. Rick, why don't you figure out an easier way for challenged people like myself to post pictures. I can round up some deer, but I can't post pictures worth a hoot. Attachment Deleted

OK,but the crankshaft isn't. Built from 440SR3 pieces? And I think it has a recoil. Anyways, its a hot rod.

jays 718 was built on a 600 bottom end. the crank was built out of 2 new tr440-3 cranks. very good cranks also. the 650 triple crank like ed said with out a doubt is the best crank tohatsu ever built.ed, you were asking,.... i have 2 650 bottom ends, 1 set of cylinders and one cylinder head. i loved racing that 650 now a 718. that motor was sweet music!!! so between all of us that have these engines it was it ever determined that they only made 10???, that's the what i have heard.

Bill I don't know if anyone has come up with a number. the engines with serial numbers 2,4, and 5 I believe are the only complete original 650's. The partial 650 with NOS crank might leave here if I get some good trade material for it.
