I have a nice SSX 340 Chap that I freshened (not totally restored, but made nice). It has the original xenoah l/c 340 with the original twin Mik BNO 'spill dam' injectors/carbs as well (isn't there any manuals out there for these BNO's??). I have a running complete spare 340 motor as well. I also have a fairly complete parts sled SSX 440 with a 102C installed... but the motor is frozen and I'm not sure yet if the crank in it is OK or not. The SSX340 runs good, but the original BNO's on it are sometimes a bit of a problem. It makes good power... up to the 'wall' of about 7300rpm... I've been following this buildup thread with interest for a while... So here is what I'd like to do. There is a complete '76 Nitro 340 nearby for cheap money near my home, & I was thinking of buying it for parts- either swapping in the running Nitro motor to the Chap as is... or using it's cylinders, pistons & carbs and mate it up to the lighter Chap 340 motor bottom end & use the comet 102c from the parts 440 chap that I have. OR maybe trying to see if I can find some '76 Nitro cylinders & top end parts to mate to the 440 Chap (IF the crank is still ok). The idea is to make my SSX appear very correct & stock but with the nasty surprise of having 80-85+ hp on tap and 9000rpm potential... so a frankenmash of SSX and Nitro. So my real question is this, red19lite... what would be the best option, and what would the 'ballpark' cost of having you create a Chap/Nitro 440 for me?

I'm not really interested in a nos 340 xenoah l/c (I have one of those as a spare already...), but if it was a 440 I might be interested for the right price. Anyway... The interesting thing about making my SSX Chap have a bit of Nitro infusion is this little original gem of a decal on it. When I was going through the sled, I'd thought I'd just remove this decal- but when I looked into it a bit further, I decided to leave it. Anyone ever see a Hartzel snowmobile chassis dyno?... Or the sticker that was put on after performance 'enhancements' were done by a dealership that had a Hartzel dyno? As the story goes... this little decal is sort of like having a GTO with a real 'Royal Pontiac' tuned decal... Certain large dealerships, usually dealerships that also supported a race team, used a Hartzel chassis dyno as a verifying tool to tune up customer sleds. Upgrades such as carb mods & clutching (as well as time consuming chassis blueprinting & aligning) were common to showroom fresh sleds that were sold to the public by dealers that used such a dyno. So Mik round-slide conversions from the Chap-only Mik BNO carbs would have been fairly routine as well as changing the clutch to a comet 102- both of which are things that would also go along with using Xenoah Nitro top end parts... these would not look out of place so long as the original Hartzel Dyno Tuned decal was left intact on my sled. Who is to say why my 'stock' SSX runs so strong while I just smile & point to the original 'dyno tuned' decal...

heres a rebuilt 440 l/c 76 crank this thing had so much rust on it looked terrible , but a lot of elbow grease and new bearings, rods, and pins turned a little off the outside diameter to get rid of some rust pits, so it got lightneted a little also , now is very nice usable crank

you ever wonder about your crank seal area of the crankshaft is rusted and pitted and you know that new seal isnt going to last long, this picture shows a xenoah with some pitting there are about 4 ways to go about repairing it , if its not too deep and the crank apart turn the seal area down to get rid of pitting it will work but you loose a little seal tension

here a pic of a turned shaft, the other repair would be a seal sleeve you polish up the rusted area and the thin seal sleeve is pressed and loctited to the shaft

here shows the seal sleeve installed , the third repair would be fill with liquid metal and polish to size hard to do equally, four repair would be spray weld grind on center less grinder to size , these repairs would work for other engines Al's kohler, tohatsu , some guys even run a sealed bearing on the outside mains , i like either a light cut on the seal area if the cranks apart or the seal sleeve if the crank not apart , some can cut the seal area down and spray weld it and do a great job, there are other ways to get the job done with out welding that would be my last resort, more coming later kevin h

first ruff spin, still need to make narrower bob weights , the crank is so narrow between crank webs, the precision weights i have are to wide, the crank will be spin balanced , with formula of rotating and and a percentage of recipicating weight, a interesting fact is i weighed 6 new 250 connecting rods and their was as much as 10% varience in the total rod weights, one thing leads to another
